Discussion:
Plustek - Rosetta and Lion

Greetings all

A mate has upgraded 10.6.8 to 10.7 using the wonders of the app store.
All good except his Plustek scanning software was ageing, despite being
bought in 2010, and required Rosetta. So no Plustek anymore.

His options appear to be:

- dual boot with Windows 7 and run his Plustek scanner from Windows
- dual boot 10.6.8 and 10.7
- roll back to 10.6 and then run updates (but time machine may assist)
- breathe deep and stump decent coin for the updated Plustek software
which runs natively under 10.7.

These options all seem to require lots of work and / or money.

Any option missing?

Appreciate your thoughts!

Cheerio

Not too many I think :-(

If he has another Mac running an earlier OS?

Otherwise rolling back to an earlier OS would be the cheapest albeit
time consuming option.

Or... instead of the expensive Silverfast drivers for the Plustek, a
new scanner with better supported in-house, modern (at least Universal)
and not 3rd party, pay for upgrades, Silverfast drivers. Such as Epson
or Canon, for example?

Or, Vuescan drivers (cheaper shareware option)?

He was aware that Rosetta was going to disappear with Lion, right?

Thanks for your thoughts. I'll pass them on. Annoying thing is that the
Plustek was quite expensive and purchased in 2010 but there is no
support for 10.7 unless new universal software is purchased; seems unfair.

And, as to your question about Rosette, er, no...:(...and here we are.

Cheers

Pity :-(

He can try out VueScan for free for a short period (its shareware) to
see if its suitable to his needs, before thinking of alternatives.

It works native in Lion which is a plus

Also: If he already owns obsolete SilverFast software he can get
VueScan for free, fully functional & untimed: - "Hamrick Software is
offering a free upgrade to anyone who has previously purchased
SilverFast who doesn't plan to buy SilverFast 8."
http://www.hamrick.com/sil.html

Yes, I think its unfair too, that Plustek's makers have gone down the
SilverFast route. Other scanner makers have done this, Umax springs
to mind. I think it sucks and nothing makes me jump ship faster than
a hardware manufacturer than won't supply drivers for its own
product. Epson and Canon seem to be safe for the meantime.

Good luck.

There is a gotcha I didn't take in when I saw this promo. You also have
to 1st purchase the $40 Standard version of VueScan, before you are
illegible for the free upgrade to VueScan Professional which costs US
$80.00 (US$79.95).

I use a package called Vuescan which works with any scanner known to
Man … there's versions for Mac OS 64 or 32 bit Intel. It's about $30
