Another factor would be the use of the comp.mac.* hierarchy. On the
whole newsgroups seem to be less used by younger users.

Certainly the case.. Even the spammer has given up. :)

Usenet is the Domain of us Senile Old now..

This is not restricted to this newsgroup, as I have found that many of the
newsgroups I have subscribed to over the years have suffered a similar fate
or had posts drastically reduced from that which was the quantity decades
ago.

Also, so I have found from speaking to many people, a lot of people
nowadays either do not know about Usenet or are not interested in it and
stick to the more recently developed social networking services and forums.

In many respects,too, as another poster has indicated, many of the
remaining Usenet users are of the older generation.

How all of this will affect Usenet in the future, I suppose we'll just have
to wait and see. It is a pity that this situation has developed, inasmuch
as it was the proliferation of spammers and trolls on Usenet.

Worthy comments; this ng is troll and spam free. Shame indeed.

I read the 24 hr helpdesk ng for my amusement; it is a very active group
and probably more like the ngs of old. And you're right - most of the
correspondents at that ng are, er, mature (apart from the odd person
actually seeking assistance)

It certainly seems that way. It's been a while since I was last here
(2002ish from memory).

Forums like AppleFritter and 68Kmla appear to enjoy robust conversation
and trade, as do the LEM mailing lists which I've remained subscribed
too for many years.

Perhaps web forums are just easier to access for the kids who weren't
around in the 90s, when newsgroups were useful for more than just
downloading fat binaries? ;-)

I have been perusing this newsgroup of late, after a lengthy absence.

The problem is, there has been little of substance posted of which has
warranted my continuance in the group. This is not restricted to this
particular newsgroup, as it equally applies to most newsgroups on
Usenet these days. Apart from this lack of activity, there is the
seemingly neverending insults of which fly about on Usenet and the
continuous spamming that understandably drives people away in droves.
At least this is so in my humble opinion and I'll stick to it as a
perceived reality.

Another web forum that I've seen some activity on, since you made
mention of forums, is of course Mac Forums.
