Discussion:
Replacement for MacDraw?
(too old to reply)

I have recently changed from an old 68k Mac to a G4. I have a lot of
drawings (mainly building floor plans) that I did using MacDraw Pro that
I want to display on my G4. I've copied the application across and it
runs OK in Classic mode. However I'd prefer to use an OSX native version
if possible. As MacDraw is no longer available, can anyone suggest a
suitable alternative?

I know there are plenty of high end drawing (and even CAD) programs out
there, but what I'm after is something quite basic that I can use for
drawing room layouts, floor plans, etc. (i.e. mostly circles, rectangles
and lines). One of the features I like about Mac Draw is being able to
set up the scaling on drawings e.g 5mm = 1m, and then use autosize lines
to show the room dimensions on a drawing.
Does anyone know of a simple program that has these features? I've tried
CAD programs like PowerDraw, but I prefer the simplicity of a drawing
program.

Here's a link to a site with a HEAP of osx apps. You're bound to find
something to experiment with here:

While the Draw layer in Appleworks isn't as elegant as a drafting tool
as Mac Draw was, I find it just as useful and fully compatible. (AW
appears to treat Draw files as vector Picts) JTS there's still no app
that comes close to Draw for sub-CAD drafting, and I'm glad to hear it
runs under classic, because it didn't on my old Mac after I moved to
8.5 (now, how to get floppies into an eMac without spending money :-)

AppleWorks has a drawing component, have you tried importing your MacDraw Pro
files into it?

You may also like to look at OmniGraffle. It's not really exactly designed
for your purpose, but it will do it very nicelyl. Find it at

Try Cadintosh. I used MacDraw for simple plans, etc under 9 and also
looked around for something similar under X.

Cadintosh is a CAD style program that I had tried under 9 and found to
be too much of a paradigm shift. When I couldn't find anything as easy
to use as MacDraw on X I gave it another go and when you get the hang
of it its actually much easier to use for technical type drawings than
MacDraw was.

Still miss MacDraw though...

OpenOffice.org, Draw module - very similar to MacDraw (type) programs, and
the price is perfect.

What about MacDraft? That's still around I think.
